According to legend Shaolin monks developed the butterfly sword as a defensive and training tool. It is a defensive tool for parrying, blocking, and intercepting. Thus the blade is not sharpened along its length, this too adds extra strength. In various forms of the sword some portion of the blade is sharpened for cutting. It is not for killing, consistent with the belief of Buddhists. It is short so as to be able to be carried concealed in robes or high boots. The typical size is about the length of the forearm.

This pair of butterfly swords are 19 inches in length, chrome plated, and unsharpened.

"The right of self-defense is the first law of nature; ... when the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any color or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction." - Henry St. George Tucker, in Blackstone's 1768 Commentaries on the Laws of England.
