Luggage
Theft is Rising
Authorities report luggage theft rising over the last five years.
Most often the theft has been done by airline employees or
contractors. But sometimes it is done by TSA employee and sometimes
by people just picking up bags at the luggage carousels. The thefts
occur world-wide. Larger airports are the typical locations, but
don't trust even the small ones. Portland, Phoenix, Las Vegas, New
York, & St. Louis have been mentioned in reports.
Airlines take no serious responsibility for the luggage entrusted
to them. They hide behind their airline ticket rules - the "contract
of carriage" limiting their liability to at most a few hundred
dollars. So people who have packed cameras and jewelry worth big
bucks have taken serious losses.
Here's what you need to do
- Carry your valuables such as jewelry, camera, iPods,
computers.
- If you can't carry it, ship it. By shipping you can adequately
insure it.
- Luggage locks are useless. In the U.S.A. the locks have to be
TSA compliant. Everyone can get a key.
- Report thief immediately to the airline, TSA, and local
police.
- Make your bag distinctive with colorful tape, ribbons, or
whatever.
- Go to the luggage carousel immediately after landing.
